Short story: A short dissertation on prayer

Prayer breathes love into life

Rabbi Rob Revera was talking to his followers about prayer. He told them that prayer should not just be ritually said, and spoken from our mind, as memorised words only. Our heart must be behind the words of every prayer that we pray, too. When we recite the same prayer, we are to say it with our own understanding of it, which includes attaching our own feelings to it too. As we pray the same prayer, we are to instil new meaning into it, which comes about through our own spiritual growth, since we last prayed that same prayer. We should never just pray a prayer in the same was as we have prayed it before. We must bring a newness to each time we pray the prayer. Every prayer prayed energises us in our connection to God, and to his love within us too, and when we pray a prayer staidly, without feeling, we are not fully allowing this energy connection to be fully vitalised by our praying. Energy, aroused in prayer, energises us, and we should not pray from a bored disposition, lacking in energy. We should pray to God with enthusiasm, joy, love, and purpose. Prayer should be motivated by nothing but love for God, to be a good prayer made to God, as all other reasons distract you from making a good soulful prayer to God. And these were amongst the points he made that day, to help his followers to pray with feeling and earnestness to God. Which do you think is a more powerful way of praying? By this I mean the passion and emotion that it generate among believers. A structured prescribed liturgy with all it's rituals or one that can be describe as having a "conversation" with God?

The Christian Bible said that it is best to pray alone in our own room, and not to broadcast our prayers publically, and exaggeratedly, amongst anyone. A heartfelt prayer between us and God is always the best type of prayer that we can make.

@josie_ It is hard to know if it was just that particular pastor, or not. I heard a pastor, once who instead of giving a sermon, he sat down on his chair, at the front there, and just prayed his own heartfelt prayer to God, as if none of us was there listening to him. It was quite moving.

@innertalks ~ Matthew 6:6 Although I've left the Catholic church a long time ago, I still recall with fondness those Sunday school when a priest would say mass for us children. Singing the hymns along with celebrating the Communion brought a sense of connection that I suppose could be called spiritual. I found the exact opposite when participating in a sermon where the pastor lead us in a "conversation" with God. It felt ordinary and bland, failing to evoke any strong feeling in me.

Yes indeed. There are many forms of prayer and praying with good intention is also good. Prayer is the way we can communicate with God. It is how we build a relationship with Him. That's why I hope and pray more people will start praying everyday so that we can have a much better world than we have now.

Thanks. You have said it well about prayer. Prayer deepens our connection with God, by strengthening our bond of love with him more too.

Your heart must be in the prayer and you must mean what you say.

Yes, a prayer repeated parrot fashion, is said more for show, and lacks the power of the heart in it.

I agree. Prayer must be from the heart with love for God.

Yes, ritual prayers have their place too, but I think that even in our saying of these, our heart needs to stay in the right place too, and pour its love into, and through our prayer too. Prayers said without connecting to them from our heart will always remain empty prayers.

Prayer should elevate our consciousness, meaning it should come from the heart. I recall “HANDS THAT SERVE ARE HOLIER THAN LIPS THAT PRAY”. So prayer should not be just lip service.

In a way, all things that we do, including prayer, should go through our heart. Otherwise, we live coldly material-centred lives alone. Yes, action should normally come before prayer, but prayer before action is a good thing to do too. It sets us up for right action, powered by our heart, not by our mind, which could have other motives for our actions.

@Shiva49 Yes, it is a good idea to do things in God's name and to credit him with our actions too, as we say, we cannot do anything without God's help.
