Yesterday was Juneteenth. I hadn't been aware of it before so I did some digging. It is celebrated annually to commemorate the ending of slavery in the United States. At the end of the American Civil War Major General Gordon Granger ordered the final enforcement of the Emancipation Proclamation in Texas on June 19, 1865. And so the name of the celebration became "June" and "nineteenth" combined. Juneteenth became a federal holiday in the United States in 2021. Texas was the first state to recognize it as a holiday in 1980. It is also known as Emancipation Day in the state. The Poor People's March was planned by Martin Luther King Jr. and was purposely planned to coincide with Juneteenth and renewed interest in the holiday nationwide. Strawberry soda has been associated with Juneteenth and is seen as a symbol of empowerment and rebellion. You can learn more about Juneteenth by going to this URL:
