Flute lesson, I held the baby!

Today a woman came to a flute lesson with her 2 month old baby. About half way through, the baby started fussing and then crying. So I had the student play and I held the baby. The baby girl quieted down a bit, and I was able to hear the student and comment on how to make her playing better, remembering the Bb, and Eb in the piece. Have you ever done this?

I've had mothers read to my children in their cars while I was teaching their children. Our younger son would be running out the door with a book as the car pulled up.

There are so many ways of dealing with children. My best success was to teach a 4th grader to read. The mother, rich and intellectual, had tried everything that money could give. I asked for a book with lots of pictures in sports, the only subject he was interested in. And quickly discovered that he had hyperkinetic disorder. So when I saw him fidgeting too much, I told him to go to the garden and run around a big plum tree I had. When he came back, I offered him a banana or an orange and we started again. We loved each other. And I did not care much for his too cold mother.

Wow! You tuned into the child and gave him what he would have never had from his mother. I hope that he grew up to be a fine reader!
