Fourth of July - Bygone Days

The Fourth of July was always a wonderful day with the family. My grandparents and my dad's sister and her family lived in Green Bay. We lived an hour from here in a small rural town. Every year, we would get together for the Fourth of July at Bay Beach Amusement Park. We would have a picnic with delicious food, now lost to memories, but I'm sure it was the usual holiday fare, especially the potato salad. I know Dad grilled hot dogs and hamburgers. What else we had, I don't remember. However, I remember my brothers, sister, my cousins, and I would spend the day on the rides. Rides were always ten cents. The price didn't go up until about ten years ago. Now ride tickets are a quarter, and usually it costs four for each ride. Anyway, it was a fun day with all the usual carnival type rides. I loved the Ferris Wheel. I even went on the octopus even though it scared me every time. There was also the carousel, tilt-a-whirl, train, and many others to enjoy throughout the day. At night, the lights came on all the rides and presented another delightful atmosphere as everyone knew the time was drawing close for everyone to pack up the picnic and bring out the blanket and head over to the back of the Pavillion for the fireworks. The first two or three rockets went boom with the flash of bright white light, and then the oohs and ahs started as fireworks burst into many colors and shapes. The ground display wouldn't be outdone and was always a spectacular show. Throughout the show, the popular patriotic music came through the loudspeakers from the Pavillion. The saddest part of the day was packing up and leaving. I miss those days. The fireworks are no longer at Bay Beach, they're downtown. There's excitement of a different kind. But to me, the best fireworks were at Bay Beach. Do you have fond memories of past holidays? Thanks for reading. The image belongs to me from Bay Beach.

Fond memories! Everlasting. Are you in contact with any of your cousins? I remember that our cousins used to come at our family house during summer holidays. It was a fun time. It was till the time when I was 10 years old. Nice lawn in the picture!

That's the back of the Pavillion where we went for the fireworks. Two passed away a few years ago. The others, no, I don't see them. Yes, they are good memories.

I would have to say the fourth was a found time I actually enjoyed with my family. Sitting on the porch being eaten by bugs last night brought a lot of that back.

I was 12 there first time I was on a 4th of July, many decades ago. There was a parade (we were living in Madison, Wisconsin) and my mom made costumes for us. Then we got together with other people my father knew at the University of Wisconsin that came from South America and had a barbecue and then went to see the fireworks. All was awesome.

Yes. On labor day we would go to a man-made lake called White Lake. They have a pavilion that has rides and arcade games. They also have little shops too. My cousins go almost every year, but I no longer go. I want to someday go with my boyfriend.

I can only remember gathering maybe 2-3 times for the 4th with family. We went to my grandparents almost every Sunday for dinner so maybe that is why. We would go look at fireworks when we got older and moved into the suburbs from the city. I don't remember any cookouts or picnics. Mike and I used to go down to the beach to watch the fireworks. Those are my happiest memories. Neither of us like crowds of people now, so we stay in and enjoy them on tv or go outside and watch the neighbors set them off.

Thank you for sharing your 4th of July memories. I remember going down to Edgewater Park and sitting on the grass. The fireworks were set off at a spot out in Lake Erie not too far from the park. I remember them being SO LOUD that I felt the booms in my chest. Have a good weekend.

Not like that but our county fair is this week and we were always at it. Sometimes tired and just wanting to go home after having been there a few days
