Road Trippin' It

One of the streams I was watching was talking about how fatiguing a road trip could be. It made me think of my days with the carnival. When we finished in one town we took down rides and the joints and loaded them onto big trucks. Each of these trucks had to be driven and it was expected that they made it to the next town we'd play in within 24 hours. Each driver would have a companion which was one of the other carnies whose job it was to keep the driver awake so we made it to the next town in record time. We kept the driver awake with witty conversation, coffee, and sometimes a beanie or two. I remember we left the Northern states and it was remarkable how pronounced the change in soil coloring was when we got into the Southwest. From the greyish-brown farmland dirt to the yellowish-orange dessert coloring. It was such a distinctive change. When we reached our destination which was Tucson, Arizona we helped them set up the joints and then made our way to our hotels to freshen up. In this type of heat in states like Arizona, New Mexico, and Texas we didn't even go on the lot until 5p. or 6p. when it started to cool down and people started to show up. During this lag time, we would find ways to entertain ourselves. My roommates and I were talking about how hot it was and, of course, we mentioned the age-old saying that it was so hot( about 120 in the shade)that we could fry an egg on the sidewalk. Well, you can probably guess what we decided to do. We went and bought some eggs. Cracked a couple open and let them follow out on the sidewalk when along the road outside the hotel. Sure enough, the eggs didn't take long at all until they were fried well.

Never tried frying an egg, but I have been in some hot weather that it probably would have worked. It is 86 but says the heat index is 98. Humidity is 78% which is better than yesterday..it was 85%. I lived in a small town in Ohio my last 2 years of High School, and before I lived there, I would go and stay with my aunt there every summer. They blocked off the downtown area for the carnival. Loved the parachute and the tilt a whirl. I guess that little town was as close as you could get to being Mayberry. One stop light that worked all the time, and one at the school that only worked during school hours. They even had Ice Cream Socials on Sunday. Looking back I really was Blessed to have lived there back then...it is the shell of a town now days..so I hear.

It does sound idealic. My town is a capitol city but when I was young it seemed like the great small town too. Do you remember sock hops?

I remember my mother telling me that one of her friends, when he was a student (this would be back in the 1930s) supported himself by working as a labourer on the roads in the holidays. And one summer it was so hot (yes even in Wales!) that the workmen were able to fry eggs on their shovels!
