I remember him being incredibly popular as an exercise host ("Sweating to the Oldies") and selling his Deal-A-Meal weight loss program. He was always a very energetic and enthusiastic and, well, flamboyant personality who would wear sparkly sleeveless T-s and the shortest shorts imaginable. Eventually he dropped out of the public spotlight and in the past few years people worried because he hadn't been seen outside of his house in years. At one point he put out a message saying that he was totally fine. More recently it has been revealed that he was dealing at skin cancer at one point. He thanked his fans just a few weeks ago for their love. Now he is gone. What a shame. He truly had such positive energy when he was in the public spotlight. I just saw this sketch Richard Simmons participated in on Whose Line Was It Anyway back in 2003 on YouTube. I must have watched it like 6 times now and I am still laughing out loud. Check it out.

I just read about him celebrating his 76th birthday yesterday. He certainly seemed like a really nice guy, and very lovable. I remember watching the episode of Whose Line with him in it just a few weeks ago on an obscure cable channel. This is sad, but what a life!

Richard was one of my favorite exercise gurus due to his love of his work. I will miss him dearly.
