About six years ago I finally got Medicare. I called the Medicare office on a Monday and was told that I needed to go to an Optomotrist. Call around and make sure to ask them if they except Medicare and I will only have to pay to Medicare 20% of the bill and I could get glasses up to $250 for free, Medicare would pay for them.
I got an appointment for that Saturday, that is 6 days away. I went and walked in and was told I had to pay a $30 copay. I told them what I was told by the Medicare office and they told me to call Medicare on Monday and tell them that I had paid that much.
I was examined by the doctor and was given a prescription as well as being told to tell the woman in the glasses room what I needed. I went in there and she said they had no glasses that Medicare would cover, but my prescriptions would be good for one year.
I left and ran into a friend that also had Medicare and he asked what kind of glasses I picked out and I told him that I didn't and told him what happened. He said,"What? I went to an Optomotrist and that was free and I got glasses for $10!" On Monday I called the Medicare office and told them I did exactly what they told me to do on the previous Monday and I paid $30 to please include that in my 20% I am to pay. He then said, "No, you are paying 100%" I explained to him what I was told on Monday and he said that between Monday and Friday Medicare decided they were not covering any eye exams, glasses or contacts. He also told me me that he guessed I wasted my $30.
About a week later I got a supplemental insurance via AARP and they said that they will not honor the prescriptions that I already had and paid for. That I have to go to one of their doctors in their network, get my examination, prescription and glasses from them. I was going to have to pay a $60 copay and they will cover $200 on the glasses. They changed that again, lowered it to $100 for the glasses.
Meanwhile I was still wearing reader glasses from the dollar store!
A year later I changed supplemental insurance companies and they had the same standards for eye care!
I tried to find another insurance company, because I moved and new companies go by what zip code you live in.I couldn't find one !
So still wearing reader glasses from the dollar store!
Changed again to a different company a few months ago and then they were worse in order to get I have to go to my doctor and get him or her write them telling them I need that benefit. For example when I was trying to get the assistance that I was told I had coming, I had to get the doctor to write them telling them I needed electricity, water or whatever. But at that doctors office I have never seen the doctor, only a nurse practioner! They said it had to be from the doctor!!!
Now I switched again to a PPO plan that will give me the eye exam with zero copay and glasses up to $300. If the glasses go above the $300 I will get the $300 off plus 20% of any amount over. Finally! Great deal!
However in this town there is only one Eye office here that the insurance will take!
But they won't have an appointment available till August 20th!

Something must be wrong there. Why don´t you ask your friend to go with you? Sometimes it is just that some people prefer toplay with their computers than to do their jobs. I´m sure that the problem is not Medicare.

We have a PPO too and have never had a problem (other than the rehab facility thing). I'm glad you finally have a good plan. Too bad you have to wait until August. Have a good day.
