Monday morning to y’all! I’m enjoying lunch and preparing next month’s countdown, which will primarily be to appease you poor myLotters who are sick to death of all the country music that’s been used in this month’s countdown.
(Yes, Linda, YOU!
) But we still have three Texans left this month, and two of them are country singers. But at least today’s singer tried rock and roll.
#3: George Jones
He really did. He recorded a few rockabilly numbers under the name “Thumper” Jones. But he’s not in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, so you can see how he failed.
In my dad’s generation, it was Hank Williams. In my generation, it was George Jones. Now it’s another George — Strait — held in the highest regard and “the” definition of country music. (And only Hank wasn’t from Texas…see a pattern here?
)
You may not be able to name five George Jones songs if I spotted you four and made the fifth one a multiple choice.
But you DO know that name, and you know that it’s synonymous with country music.
George Jones
Born George Glenn Jones
September 12, 1931, Saratoga
Died April 26, 2013, Nashville (respiratory failure) (age 81)
HALLS OF FAME: Country Music, Texas Country Music, Nashville Songwriters
Early in his career George had a little rocking beat to his music. This is from Town Hall Party (but still Linda? NO!!!!!!!!), with the great Joe Maphis backing him on guitar.
