It’s time for another song that rocks! Well, like the first two this month, it doesn’t really rock, but it has “rock and roll” in the title. Unlike the first two, this one actually got played on rock and roll radio stations! Hit the wayback machine as we get our groove from the 60s for today’s song. I Dig Rock and Roll Music - Peter, Paul, and Mary And hooray for the late Mary Travers, who was born here in Louisville!!! This is such a great song, mainly because you don’t know if they were serious or not. While they mention the Beatles, Donovan, and the Mamas and the Papas (even mimicking their sound), if you look at the PPM chart action with the advent of the British Invasion…it wasn't much. So you don’t really know if it was a little humor (“they got a good thing goin’ when the words don’t get in the way”) or a little protest against the rejection of protest songs by commercial radio stations (“but if I really say it the radio won’t play it”) or sour grapes. Maybe all three. You can interpret it any way you please, as is the case with most songs. The spot-on impersonation of the Mamas and the Papas indicates there’s a little love for the music, so it’s not all a sarcastic put-down. I Dig Rock and Roll Music Written by Paul Stookey, James Mason, and Dave Dixon Recorded by Peter, Paul, and Mary From Album 1700, 1967 The message may not move me:

Definitely! And they gave John Denver his first #1 (“Leaving on a Jet Plane”).

I read somewhere that they were being facetious.

There’s a quote in Picky Wedia from Mary Travers saying that they were disappointed that good songwriting didn’t follow the folkies who went into rock and roll, so I’ll agree with facetious.

Mike digs Peter, Paul and Mary and this song has been played a lot on our old record player. You're right, they are spot on with the sounding like the Mama and the Papa's.

I’m glad I’m not the only one who thought it was the Mamas and the Papas.
