Booze and childhood. A true story.

This is a true story I promised to write here for Jim Bauer (@porwest). At a post I wrote yesterday, I mentioned that Bailey reminded me of chilhood. And he answered the the mix of childhood and booze must be interesting. So here it is. A post for Jim. I live in a wine exporting country. Even people who don´t drink have a glass of wine with their meals. And by no means is that something to be guity of. Unfortunatly, there are also several people who drink too much. But I think that this happens everywhere, with different kinds of alcohol depending on the country. Not many people I know are alcoholics and only on special occations do they drink too much. My husband never drank much and only was drunk once in his life, after a friendly soccer match with Santos when Pele played there). His club invited both teams for a cocktail and he was angry and had lost 20 pounds during the game. All his team got drunk. They did not eat anything but drank whatever was around. They had lost 5 to 0. My parents never bought Coca Cola or the like. But they gave us a bit of red wine with water at lunch and at dinner. My father, a doctor, said it was healthy. My grandmother went father though. She mixed dark beer with sugar and an egg and beat it until there was foam on top. She gave us a glass of it topped with ground cinnamon. It was delicious. And as I was her favorite granddaughter, she took me once every week to a liquor store and bought a thimble of a liquor made with rum and maybe cream or milk. I don´t know because I must have been 6 or 7. She told me that it was for health reasons and I never minded about health. It was much too good to say no to it. And the only liquor that I have tasted as good as that is Baileys. I could drink a baby bottle of it but I´m afraid I´d get drunk. I always wonder if in any of your countries you are "taught" to drink when you are young so that you are not an alcoholic later.

All rather interesting, and thanks for expanding on that. I do think you are right, that in households where kids are taught to RESPONSIBLY drink, it DOES make a difference. The idea is to enjoy the drink and the minor effects of it. Not to necessarily get sloppy drunk and lose your mind. lol

It also happens with food. We can be happy eating small amounts of food or we can eat like pigs, if we so like. A piece of cake can make you happy and a whole cake can make you obese and diabetic.

Grownups should learn how to drink too.
