It Has Always Been this Way

It is often said that history tends to repeat itself, and it is something that is not just something we say. It's something that happens. We live in the here and now and somehow try to find a difference between what was and what is.
When it comes to politics, we feel like things are chaotic and out of order. Perhaps that is where some of the animosity toward Trump comes from? I am not sure.
But the reality is that politics has always been dirty. It's always been tooth and nail. It has always been cutthroat and sometimes downright nasty. There's always been heat.
I think it is important sometimes to step back and take a look back. Watch old debates between politicians and pundits. We need to see the exchanges to see what really happened as opposed to what we think, or even how some people think they remember it.
A very heated exchange between William F. Buckley, Jr. and Gore Vidal that happened in 1968 is quite reminiscent of discourse we might see today. These were pundits who had different opinions and ideas and were quite passionate about them.
Whether you agree with their points is not the important part. To recognize that it has always been this way is.

I was just 10 yrs old when that 1 was going on & I wasn't to interested
in politics back then now I am which is a LONG time ago to now.
But your right it's a war of who is gonna do what to who's all just talk
& if people would like you said go back in time with history they'd see
who was strong & was FOR the people & who was all talk & no action.

@porwest We just want to live as peaceful & easy as we can without
the govt in our pockets every time we stick our hands in it & pull out
lint, & wonder where our next meal or $ is going to come from.

@2ndchances24 True. I mean a lot of THAT is self-inflicted as many people simply don't know how to manage their money and don't take the time to learn and then think someone owes them something. But SO MUCH money gets wasted, when you pay taxes, you just feel like you are being robbed.

@porwest yeah well like my husband said, " when I crashed & was
in the hosp & didn't know if I was going to make it or not, everything
stopped" he didn't know what to do or if he was willing to keep going.

As they say, some things never change, just the people do.

The important point of this post is to remind people to step back and bring some critical thinking and rational thought to things. Too many people think what we are seeing now is unusual. It's not, and it is important to understand that fully.

@LindaOHio If you think she can get a sentence out...I need one of those slapping my forehead emojis. AMAZING how people cannot see what is right in front of them. Yeesh.
Vote for Harris. More inflation. More wars. More crime. More word salads. More horrible policy ruining lives.
Again, yeesh.

Suddenly I have this visual picture of politicians all singing My Way and each one of them thinks their way is the best way,

Well, isn't this what they have always done? The ONLY difference is that there were actual discussions and exchanges of ideas and SOME compromise. Not a single side has the BEST way, but if we can talk about it we can find that common ground that at least finds a BETTER way.

I agree that the nastiness has always been there, just not as visible as it is nowadays. But then again, they didn't have 24/7 news channels, social media sites, and camera phones to contend with back then.
