London Parish Boundaries

Opposite the London Stone are these plaques which mark the boundary between London Parish Churches. I was wondering if they are there to prevent dodgy clergy from taking tithes from another parish and pocketing them. These are pretty common in London, but in the country as a whole it is thought only five per cent of markers survive. Frequently these markers are all that remain of once thriving churches. St M B marks the boundary of St Mary Bothaw whose name is derived from Boat-Haw or Boat House. The church was destroyed in the Great Fire of 1666 and never rebuilt. St S L S is St Swithin London Stone. This church was also destroyed in the Great Fire and rebuilt by Sir Christopher Wren, who also rebuilt St Paul's Cathedral. It was badly damaged by bombing during World War II and was finally demolished in 1962.

@Ronrybs Most things worth having aren't cheap. Lol. Plus I need to eat a jammie dodger in London.

I like knowing this sort of trivia. Otherwise I'd rock up to one of these and not know what on earth it signified.

@JudyEv Sometimes it is hard to filter the reality from the fantasy when it comes to the internet

I've seen a couple of these round here. I will have to take a photo next time I go that way (Friday, if I'm not in too much of a rush!)

I have never noticed any of them outside of London. Pity so many have been lost through the years
