Good evening, everyone. First, for the folks in Florida, Georgia, North and South Carolina, Tennessee, and even here in Kentucky: praying for y’all. Helene is a monster. Earlier today it was 255 miles west of Tampa and the feeder bands were setting off tornado warnings 550 miles away in coastal Georgia! Our meteorologists are doing a live update even as I type, and they’re talking about the hurricane’s remnants and their effects on us. Our problems are supposed to be primarily rain, with wind gusts around 40 MPH. This is being caused by the Fujiwhara Effect…a meteorological term that would make a great name for a punk band. Next up is LouAvul. We were supposed to go to the zoo tomorrow. It would’ve been canceled by the weather anyway; however, she has covid. I got a text from her yesterday that says her husband has it, too, “so we’re making each other miserable.” I’ve told her that you’re asking for her and I’m keeping you posted and her response was: I got a “new” phone. Not the newest, latest, greatest phone, oh no. I learned how to do this. Now that the new phone is out, Apple is discontinuing the iPhone 14 to make room for the newer (and more expensive) models. So I bought an iPhone 14. Apple gives a 10% military discount, which is cool, so it was about $130 cheaper than getting it through my phone carrier. Plus, it’s MINE, so if my carrier starts to jack up my rates I can leave. I’m not stuck for 36 months, the usual length of time associated with getting a new phone. Speaking of phones, I just offloaded my vacation photos to my external hard drive and flash drive (always good to have a backup to the backup!). I told the kid at Apple, “You have NO idea of the pain ‘back then.’” I explained to him that, when I was a kid, you only had 12 to 24 photos to take on your roll of film, so you had to plan accordingly. Couldn’t “waste” a picture of a marker in case you saw a bear or an eagle an hour later. With a phone camera? I have 128 gigs of space on the phone, and another 200 gigs of iCloud space. TAKE THOSE PICTURES! (That’s how I can give you details: I take pictures of the informational plaques or signs so I can “know” what the main display was. ) The photo here is a Muscovy duck. I had never seen one of these until I had lunch in the park at the state capital building in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. I went for a walk a couple of weeks ago at a park in Elizabethtown (about 50 miles from here and the namesake of that Orlando Bloom movie from 2006 or so) and there was another one! And that’s not zoomed in: it let me get relatively close because I had a bag of bird seed with me. Y’all have a great Friday, and everyone in the southeastern US, STAY SAFE.

Please pass along my good wishes to Lou and her hubby. I hope she doesn't miss her trip. Watching Helene with great interest. She's whizzing her way north. Hope everyone stays safe. Good luck with the new phone. I love ducks. Have a good weekend.

I just texted Lou and got an update, and I passed along your well wishes. She said she appreciates the prayers. I don’t think my tornado warning notifications have stopped going off since yesterday afternoon. And, as I said, that thing is huge. There were tornado warnings from it in Virginia at the time it was making landfall last night.

@LindaOHio — we had over 100,000 without power at the height of the storm. They’ve already restored a fourth of those customers. We didn’t get higher than 41 MPH in town (measured by the weather office, that is), and mostly those were gusts, not 60 MPH sustained like when Ike came through.

@FourWalls Thanks. Yes, I'm glad the worst is over and you are OK. We never did get much rain and no real wind.

He's a pretty boy. I love those ducks. Hope Lou and her husband starts feeling better soon. Stay safe. We are supposed to get wind and rain here too. It feels chilly outside today

I think they’re beautiful, too, but I was certainly taken aback by their unique look the first time I saw one. I’m staying home today. No sense in trying to go out, with all the trees on my side of town and the risk of flooding (even though it’s not supposed to get “heavy” until tonight).

@FourWalls They are actually more related to geese than ducks. We went to the auction. Most of the time the wind hasn't been to bad

Muscovies are common here really. I take photos of lots of informational plaques or whatever. They come in incredibly handy sometimes to remind me of stuff.

I take those pictures all the time now, but when you only had 12 pictures on a roll you ignored them.

I have seen the weather reports of the storms headed for the Southeast that remind me of Hurricane Katrina that hit south Louisiana in 2005.

They’re all terrible. I’ve been through four, most of which were “brushes” instead of a direct hit. If I lived down there the instant they said they were “watching a system” I’d be heading for Minnesota.

@FourWalls I did go through Hurricane Laura in 2020 and it was bad news. I was in another town north of New Orleans when Katrina hit and it was bad news as well.

That's a beautiful duck..Nice patches of colours . I hope that everyone stays safe with the rain and the hurricane. Happy about your new phone and you got a good discount there. I remember those times of limited pics and film rolls. Those old things with a limit had their own charm. We cherished the little that we had. Now with abundance, that is lost.

My encounter with one in Louisiana was the first time I’d ever seen one. At first they’re ugly, like their bills were dipped on candle wax; however, I quickly came to appreciate the unique beauty of them.

@FourWalls Nature has so much to offer in beauty and interesting things. We just need to pay attention and admire them.

I looked at that duck for quite awhile. It’s so cool! I noticed Lou hadn’t been around and wondered if I missed a trip. I’m sorry they have Covid. Hopefully, everybody in the path of the tornado will be okay. I pray that.

Those were the days. Remember James Garner and Mariette Hartley did Polaroid commercials?
