In calcutta on mahalaya people give holy water to ancestors

In calcutta it is mahalaya. It marks the beginning of durga puja. On this day people of offer holy water of ganges to their ancestors fathers and mothers who are not there in the earth. Mantras are chanted and holy water offered to them. From here on durga puja begins. On the 6th day that is mahashasti puja is offered to Goddess Durga.

There is a big festival in Nepal too. I'm not sure if it's for the same reason but I'm guessing so.
