What a wonderful day! I so enjoy those retreats. I’m back, and unfortunately for you, I’m picking up right where I left off.
Here we go back to the lists of my 100 favorite songs that charted in country and in the top 100. Looks like country’s up first, and lookie who’s back!
I Love You Best of All - Louvin Brothers
Ah, harmony. I love it, and you can blame growing up with these guys’ records in the house for that. Ira and Charlie didn’t invent harmony, but they dang sure perfected it.
Charlie told biographer Charles K. Wolfe that, although the Louvins were credited with writing this beautiful love song, they didn’t. He said they paid to do a copyright search on the song, and could not find who did originally write it. “So we took care of that,” he said.
Hey, that happens. Songs that were passed around the communities in gatherings and back-yard picking parties rarely came with the sheet music. It wouldn’t happen today, but back then, who even thought of entire libraries devoted to “hillbilly” or “folk” music?!
So Ira and Charlie didn’t write this, even though they’re in the BMI database as the songwriters. It doesn’t matter, given that, once they wrapped those lovely harmonies around this song, it became theirs.
I Love You Best of All
Written by Ira and Charlie Louvin
Recorded by the Louvin Brothers
Released as a single, 1961
Peak chart position: #12
Today’s rock song: “King of Clowns”

Wow the music was like my childhood Sunday Song. We often hear it from my dad's or our neighborhood radio.
