Above is one of the paintings I did on Thursday. I think it might actually be a waterlily. I started it the week before but I didn't want to show it to you until it was finished. Well, now it is, so here it is!
Below is how I went about painting it, and all this was done inbetween painting another one:-
WEEK ONE
Last week I started this painting by painting the background. I did this with paintbrushes of different sizes. I used a bigger painbrush for large open areas and a little paintbrush for details and when I wanted to paint up to a pencil line but not go over it.
I used several different greens in the background, from greens straight from a tube to greens that I mixed from two or more other colours. There are other colours in the background too, like blues, browns and oranges as you can see. I think that large expanse of blue/green over on the top left is actually a lily pad, but I didn't realise this at the time of painting!
Art is all about observation, so.I think I should be observing more!
I found out this week that I missed a bit of background that should have been green inbetween two of the petals on the right.
WEEK TWO
So in week two I realised I'd missed out that bit of green in the background, but I decided to put that in last.
I did the petals of the main flower with palette knives. First of all I put out some cerulean blue and some ultramarine. I mixed the cerulean blue with some white to make it lighter and I used a palette knife to spread it onto the middle of one of the petals. Then I spread some ultramarine round the edges. Then I used the palette knife to mix the two colours together a bit where they meet. Then I went onto the next petal and did the same, and I did that with most of the petals.
The petal on the bottom right of the flower was lighter than most of the petals, so I added even more white to the cerulean blue. I again added ultramarine to that and attempted to mix them only where the two colours meet.
When I came to the big petal at the bottom right, which now you come to think about it could be the part where the flower meets the stem, I used lilac, peach pink, orange and rose colours.
I made sure I left space in the middle for the centre of the flower, and bits spreading out into the petals themselves. I had a break before I did that though and I went to get my dinner. Then after dinner I came back to it and I painted the centre piece. The main colour I used was mid yellow, but there are bits of orange, peach pink, and even the occasional rose colour in there too. I used a palette knife to do this too. And then I called it finished.
I thought that my other painting was finished too, but when I came to look at it later I realised there were some shadows I'd forgot to put in, so I'll do those next week, and when it is properly finished I will show you that one too!
What have you lot been getting up to today?
I hope you are all well.
Have a great night.

That's a nice looking flower. I will be making more email changes today. It's turned into a nightmare project. So many problems. Have a good weekend.

@rakski Thank you very much. Yes, that's one of the reasons why I go to the photo expert shop and get 15 photos printed twice a month!

I'm glad you were able to finish this painting. I like that it's a blue lily.
I've been busy taking care of my sick daughter and doing the usual chores. I haven't done any serious drawing or painting. I would sometimes just sketch in my journal.

@sharonelton You're welcome, and thanks. Daughter is still recovering. Lots of people sick these days. I doodle on my sketchpads or do paint swatches when I can't draw or paint.

Thank you very much. I'm glad I could too. I'm glad you like it.
I hope your daughter will be better soon. Chores do not sound like a fun thing to do.
I have several sketch books dotted around!

I don't recall ever seeing a blue waterlily.
Is it a lily that lives on water or is it a lily made of water, hence the color?
Either way, it's beautiful!

You're getting me very confused!
That's what the picture looked like on the photo I was copying, although the colours were a little bit lighter on that. No, it's not a lily made of water!
I'm glad you like it anyway!

Sorry.
Yeah, I guess blue waterlilies do exist. I went to look for some images. It looks more like violet to me but the poem says violets are blue, so it's blue. Then it also depends on the light conditions.
Sorry.
