Ollie's is Coming to Town

I have written a few times about Ollie's Bargain Outlet, which is something kind of like a Big Lots, but bigger and better than one. There's one near us, about 35 minutes away a few towns over, and we go there to browse around at least once a month or so. I am not really a shopper, but because they always have new things to check out and quite good prices on most things, I actually enjoy going there now and then. They even have good prices on certain spices and other food items—but you still have to look, of course. It was recently announced that one will be opening up right here in the city we live and should be opening around June or July of next year. Normally I'd not be excited about a new retail store opening up. But I am actually looking forward to this one opening, and better yet, it's practically right down the street from our house. It may be dangerous, actually.

They have a pretty extensive book selection and I would agree with Vicki, the prices on them are good.

We have an Ollie's and a Big Lot here in my city. They are pretty decent places to find bargains. Of the two, I like Ollie's better. You're going to have lots of fun when yours opens.

@porwest I don’t know if I’d drive a half hour to go to one, but if it’s close by then it is fun to stop by every now and then.

@moffittjc I just enjoy the store, which makes it a bit novel. I wonder if I will have the same feeling about it when I can just go down the street.

Yeah, we go to the one in Granite City about 35 minutes away now, so having one closer will definitely be a big plus. Fun store to walk through.

It will be a while before the store here is opened. But in the meantime, we'll still go to the one 35 minutes away.

We have Big Lots here, but no Ollie's. I think I've heard of Ollies only through myLot folks. Sounds like a store I would go to . . . yah, I don't doubt it's dangerous.

@porwest Someone else here said that. As far as I know, our Big Lots are still kickin' - I don't see the closing signs "yet" (but I know they're in trouble). I actually don't care for Big Lots - they aren't exactly "cheap". Someone said Ollie's has better stuff. Do I really need another store to get hooked on . You are the stock master . . . tell us if you do!

@porwest I guess it's official now (according to FB anyway). I suppose the closing sale signs will be up soon, if not already . . . I just went there not too long ago and it wasn't up yet. I just heard about Party City too - we visited that morning and by afternoon I saw on FB they were on their way out too.

Our Big Lots all closed. I didn't know about Ollie's until I found out about it by accident when I was doing stock research on discount chains and Ollie's came up in the peer group, and then found out there was one nearby and I was hooked. I have not bought the stock though. I might. But not yet.

Happy for y'all. I go to an Ollie's in the bigger city an hour from us and my favorite things there are the books.

My favorite section is the food section, even though it's small and there are only a few items I actually find of value. The spices being one. But I just love the store.

@porwest You have to look at expiration dates there. I have seen several things there clearly expired.

It's a really fun store to walk through. It will be nice having one closer, and now they are saying it may open in March.

I love their book section! There is one in Baton Rouge, where I used to live and I do miss it! I visit every now and then when I am visiting one of the daughters, as she loves to go shopping there also! I wish we would get one up our way. McComb would be a good location for them. The Dirt Cheap just closed there. That's one store that I was not fond of.

@porwest Dirt Cheap here consists of buy outs from big stores and a lot of them are returned merchandise. You have to make sure the stuff works before you buy it!! Shelves are messy in most of the stores. Bedding is usually a good buy in there and if you can find clothing you like a decent price. The last time I went in, I had noticed the prices were higher than usual, so I just left. Sometimes the store is so messed up, it isn't worth the time to try to look.

@porwest I agree. I'm glad Dirt Cheap is gone! I am hoping they put something GOOD in there!

@kareng I am not sure the "make it sure it works before you buy it" thing, or the mess would appeal that much to me. It's a chore enough going into a Dollar General.

I have not heard of any Ollie's closings, so that would be new to me considering the company is rapidly expanding store locations at this time. But I guess it does depend on the performance of same store sales at their location near you.
