I Didn't Know this --- Did You?

When I was in school I didn't go out for the gossip and such that went on in my circle of friends. Later in life I wasn't into it either. Some of my friends were even a bit surprised I didn't want to talk about others or didn't know the newest on them. I just never found it of interest to me or wanted to delve into people's private lives. Did you? But now I just learned that engaging in gossip can trigger a release of dopamine in the brain. This can actually cause a feeling of pleasure or happiness. It even contributes to the engagement of sharing private information about people. Sharing secrets can be a bonding experience and bring on a sense of closeness with the listener. Part of that is rather creepy. I mean getting a good feeling from spreading gossip about someone that could potentially hurt that person. We are complex creatures, aren't we? Your thoughts. The picture is from istock.

I knew that. I did learn it in high school psychoolgy. But, like you I didn't engage in it much. I might've said something to confirm something I heard, or ask a question about something someone said, but about it.

I try to avoid mean gossiping. But don't mind talking nice about others

@celticeagle — maybe that’s why we gossip so much. But it’s right: I find it SO HARD to keep a secret.

Gossip is considered a sin. It gets people in trouble and causes harm to one's character. People who gossip have sick natures who get pleasure from hurting people.

I would keep quiet about things I know other people since I do not to be labeled as a tattle teller.

I think because some people laugh at the things they hear and pick on the people they are talking about behind their back that is what brings them the happiness feeling. But you are right how sad it that!

Me too. I figure by the time this info has gotten to me it could be all jumbled up. Don't care for it.

@celticeagle We are indeed weird creatures. Malicious gossip is always to be avoided even if it does give a little thrill. Gossip magazines are just nasty, raising revenue by informing readers about who is sleeping with whom - why does anyone need to know that?

I don't think I gossip about people. I do voice concerns though. Like my best friend told me not to tell anyone about something, but I did tell my mother because I was concern about what my best friend told me.
