* The first American valentine was published by Esther Howland in 1849. * The first valentine sent was supposedly a poem sent by Prince Charles d' Orleans to his wife in the 15th century while he was inprisoned in the Tower of London. * Romans had a festival called Lupercalia in the middle of February to officially start their spring. Many historians believe that Valentine's Day could have begun with this festival. The picture is from my collection. * 145 million valentines are swapped each year. * Americans spend about $27.5 Billion on Valentine's Day.
