Such a peaceful site nowadays

Last weekend I went out for a walk with some friends. The place we visited was Greenham Common, which was previously famous throughout the 1980s and 90s as the site of the Women’s Peace Camp. The camp began as a protest against the siting of cruise missiles at the air force base there, and continued as a focus of the campaign against nuclear missiles. Today the air force base and the missiles are all gone, Greenham Common is an historic site and nature reserve known for its rare plants. But there are still ominous reminders of what used to be there – those innocuous-looking humps are the bomb-proof bunkers where the cruise missiles were stored. Who knows if we may need such things again? All rights reserved. © Text and image copyright Fleur 2025.

The world is looking more like it might be necessary every day. But I am glad it is peaceful now.

Who indeed (knows if we may need such things again). The world is in such turmoil at the moment. You have to wonder what the outcome will be.

A lovely spot. I hope they won't need the bunkers anymore. Have a great day.

Peace is indeed a blessing. Humans create wars to kill other humans. Ironic!
