Songs with "one-word titles" have continued to grow over time many becoming huge hits on the Billboard charts. Every decade has them and the trend has multiplied in recent years. Hey, what's that phrase...make it short and sweet. And tunes with one-word titles opens up a wide range of emotions the artist can express in that song.
So, let's see what songs I picked as today's favorites which say more with less...
*Comments on my song choices welcome.
VIDEO SONG: RAINDROPS- DEE CLARK (1961)
A song comparing tears to raindrops is a clever way to express sadness over losing a lover. The track was complete with heavy rain and thunder sound effects which open and close the song. A tune ahead of its time in using experimental sounds way before The Beatles dabbled in it.
TRIVIA CHALLENGE
***Here is today's music challenge for those who like to figure out who the artist, song or facts are from the clues provided... Words with quote marks provide some hints!
1. This song by the group "Three Dog Night" "used a NUMBER" for its one-word title. And it's the "loneliest number you will ever know." It was one of 21 U.S. Top 40 hits for the band, who did very well with songs written by other artists. You might remember and enjoyed listening to another hit of theirs called "Joy to the World" a #1 charter in 1970.
-Do you know the name of this titled song?
2. This song was Petula Clark's first hit reaching the top U.S. spot in 1964. Amazingly, without any promotion, Petula was the first female singer from the UK to hit #1 in the U.S. with her tune during the rock era (after 1955). The one-word titled song is the opposite of "UPTOWN." To United States listers this song meant going to the "heart of the city where you can "listen to the music of the traffic in the city, take in a movie show, and enjoy the neon signs that are so pretty."
-Do recognize this Petula Clark titled song?
3. This "rock group from England" was one of the most commercially successful acts of the "British Invasion." The group consisted of "5 members." The "drummer" was the group's leader, producer and co-songwriter and a good bet his "last name" was used to "identify the band." Their One-Word song "BECAUSE" was a ballad in contrast to their hit making rock and roll formula, but it managed to reach #3 on the U.S. charts anyway. I'm sure this 1964 surprise made the group "GLAD ALL OVER." The band put quite a few "BITS AND PIECES" of songs together among their seventeen top 40 hits in the U.S.
-Were you old enough to remember listening to their songs on the radio? Who were these British Invasion guys?
***Let's be a person of "few words" when providing the answers to this trivia quiz. Until the next music edition...
