How's the stock market there?

The wars going on in various parts of the world and the tight atmosphere due to such conditions always put a great amount of strain on the stock market. If stock markets in the US or in any European country or Japan fluctuate, it impacts the entire world. Such tense atmosphere is currently going on between India and Pakistan. And no one knows how long this situation is going to last. This means the share market faces huge blows which in turn wipes out the investments done by smaller and individual investors. Are any of you into stocks? Have you seen your stocks suffer due to the volatile conditions in the world?

I can only best describe it as volatile. But that's the way the cookie crumbles. I've been at it for 30+ years through many ups and downs, good times and bad...you just stick with a strategy and don't let market conditions affect your decisions. So long as you are buying good, solid companies, they will do well over time almost all of the time.

Yes definitely the current market situation is quite volatile. Secondly I know you have been into stocks for nearly 3 decades now. Because we have earlier talked about this topic and you had suggested a few guidelines to me. I remember that. After that time I have been into stock market a bit seriously. I have been learning how to pick stocks and how to keep a certain strategy. Initially the mentality is also volatile and shaking. Due to that, we tend to take a few decisions either out of curiosity or of fear and/or panic. In spite of all this, I am still stuck with 5 to 6 such stocks that I cannot exit. Or I will have to face losses. The only way I think I can get out, is to average the stocks that have come down. So that even if they don't reach the price point that I bought, but the average would help me exit sooner.

@abhi_bangal If they are companies you think have upside potential in the future, what would be the reason to sell them? Usually if I own a solid company and the stock price goes down, I buy the shares at what I consider to be a discount and accumulate shares. MOST of my stocks pay at least some dividend, so this increases my income. At the same I can enjoy bigger gains down the road. If at some point I decide to offload some shares, or my entire position, I will do so with higher gains because I took advantage of the cost advantage.

@porwest But there's one thing. We will have to search companies that pay dividends. Because not all pay dividends. I still don't hold stocks that pay dividends. So that's something to look forward to. Also yes, the mentality should be like you said. If the companies are solid, there's no point in selling. But then there should be patience. Also, shares of large cap companies reach a saturation point in the course of time. They don't cross a certain value. So I personally feel if we have to create wealth then it'll come via developing companies and not the ones that have fully grown. Just my views.

I am yet to start with stock market because I am more focus on other investments. Just like any other form of investments, it involves risk. The current condition will pass and the market will be good again.

I think I've started way too late. I can't say how late I'm to be in stocks. That's why it feels like I've to make the most of my time and make every move count. Of course, there's no field in our lives that doesn't involve risk. Whatever. I felt good to hear that the current volatile situation will pass soon. Because these are all difficult times as you may be watching world news.

@ARIES1973 It's not really easy to understand that. There are a lot of metrics that are tested by the experts before they suggest you any stock to invest in. But I always wonder how much time and effort they may be putting in to study those things. And actually there are people who do that and they have earned fortune through that. Respect to them.

@abhi_bangal One reason why I haven't tried stocks is that I don't understand much how it works. I hope the market would recover soon.

Geo political factors mean that the stock market here is affected. Yet it can be a good bet to invest in BEL, L & T and a few more involved in Defence production. The war situation doesn't seem to go away fast. In the last few hours, a few more drone attacks have been tried in Ferozepur, Akhnoor, Jammu, Samba, Srinagar and Awantipura. The mad Military across the border is not de-escalating. In fact, they are now trying to whip up the victim card. The market will rise post conflict so a good time to buy quality stocks on dip. I would suggest GAIL, Yes Bank, BEL, Reliance Industries and SBI snd rest you can do your own research.

I had kept your reply in the wings because I always see that your replies are very detailed. And one needs to think (at least me ) taking some time before replying to your messages. We are becoming a global village these days. And whatever action takes place anywhere in the world, it has perfect reaction of having an impact on this stock market. Companies - be it large cap companies or small cap companies, they certainly get affected. And the impact that it gets it takes time to recover. The war situation has gone away. And it's time for the markets to recover. And they are recovering or started to recover to some extent. A lot of people are predicting that defense stocks will searge in the coming few days. And along with that there are already talks about green energy stocks going up. At least in the next 3 to 4 years. Some people are hoping that Yes Bank again becomes a multibagger. I had seen that it had been around 19 a few days back and it had touched 21 rupees lately. But I am still not very confident about investing in Yes Bank. Are you also into stocks and stock market?

Now that I'm retired, I stay away from the stock market. I have more stable investments.

Wow... That's really really good. Good to see that there are other viable options that are not only potentially sustainable but also stable. Whatever be the source of earnings, be it stock market or any other investments, as you are saying, stability is the most important thing.

I am not specifically talking about you, but many people think that stock market is a kind of gambling. Because you never know when any stock will go up or it will come down. So it's like putting the money on the line with a big risk of losing it as well. It's exactly how one loses money in gambling games. But that is not the case these days. A lot of metrics and tools have been developed to more accurately predict certain stocks price and where it may be in a particular time range. That is why, the risk has come down a lot and people can earn well in share market.

@sarik1 Stock market, mutual funds, etc can bring one to losses in a short period of time. But then it's the place where one can earn a huge amount of money too. You can call it fortune!

Markets were a bit on the losing side in the past week when the tensions between India and Pakistan were at its high. But now, since the start of this week, it's been growing well. It's all green. And it's always great to see green candles instead of the red ones
