As usual, these are alphabetical until I get to the top ten. So how did we jump from B to H in a BH (Big Hurry)?
That’s the way it goes in the wild world of my countdowns. And this countdown celebrates the wild music year of 1975. There were some landmark albums that came out that year, which means they’re now fifty years old. They’ll be along in the top ten. Meanwhile, here’s today’s song.
Hot Patootie - Bless My Soul - Meat Loaf
Speaking of “landmark,” this means that Rocky Horror Picture Show is FIFTY this year. The play on which it was based is older (it debuted in 1973).
And the poor kids today have no clue about going to see this at the midnight movies, with 2/3 of the crowd dressed up as characters in the movie, riffing it like they were inventing Mystery Science Theater 3000, and bringing props like squirt guns and newspapers. Listen, I’ve seen this movie a hundred times at home, but it’s NOTHING like seeing it at a midnight showing.
Anyway, some trivia for you. Meat Loaf, who later became famous for doing anything for love (but not that) by the dashboard lights, was in the U.S. version of the play. In it, he played BOTH Eddie and Dr. Scott (Eddie was Dr. Scott’s nephew in the plot). When the movie was made, Meat Loaf was relegated to the one appearance (well, two if you count the dinner scene
).
I have to tell you that there are movies that I’d much rather listen to the soundtrack of than watch. Believe it or not, O Brother, Where Art Thou is one of them. This is another!
A smoking introduction to the guy who’d later own 1978 with his Bat Out of Hell album.
