Zen story: The Zen master who bowed to his student, acknowledging his poignant words

We should never cut off our own light to spite the way our feet might be taking us

A student went into the Zen master's room one day, to hand him a letter from another Zen master, who had passed by, but had not wanted to come in. The student, never being in his master's room before, was surprised that there was nothing at all in the master's room, not even a bed. The student asked the master, "What gives here? Why do you live so spartanly in this room, like this?" The master smiled at his student, and pointed at his heart, as he replied. "I have all that I need to live my life in here, why burden my body with other worries, and concerns?" The student grimaced, a bit, but still he replied like this: "Every body needs the comfort of sleep, as your body is not yours to abuse, but just lent to you for this journey. You might not be concerned, but your body is, when it isn't treated with love, but treated as if it is merely a useless vehicle for yourself." The Zen master was taken aback by the directness of his student's reply. He bowed deeply, as he left the room, and said. "You should be the Zen master here. I am leaving." "Do what you will with the room. But do remember that you are not the room either. You are the light in the room, as much as the light that that window lets through too. Do not place your furniture in front of your windows." Story takeaway: We should not live in a spartanistic way, but treat ourselves with as much respect as we give to the teachings, for the teachings are us, include us, and are not mutually exclusive to us, either, and yet they should not replace us either. We should never cut off our own light to spite the way our feet might be taking us. Our feet, must be connected to our hearts, not to our minds, for us to walk through life truly, guided rightly by the light, in our hearts, not dimmed by what our minds might want to believe on their own. Yes, pixabay is a useful site to get inspiration from, as it has photos of mostly everything, if we can find them there.

@innertalks Yes, it has. I've just finished painting pictures of a puffin and a swan.

That reminds me of the transition of Papalship recently. Pope Francis chose a spartan lifestyle while Pope Leo reverted to a residential style befitting that position. I go by when I worked hard all my life, I am also entitled to the fruits of my labor. At least, I have to maintain a certain decorum for the sake of my family. However, we should be guided by our soul consciousness. I had a few instances of astral projection, when I hit a road block that looked insurmountable. I was looking at myself from another dimension.

I heard that about Pope Leo too, and perhaps he will be more like King Leo the Lionheart, than King Francis, a lover of animals, and lions, as Saint Francis of Assisi reportedly was too. God gives us all that we need, here, but usually not all that we want, unless we are stealing those wants off of others, as you have said many times, a rich man has accumulated many crooked skeletons, in his closet, on his way to becoming rich. When you are up above your body like that, at least you would re-realise, that nobody can take their material possessions with them to that other dimension.

@Shiva49 We need to gain wisdom from our living our life here, in how to apply love, and truth, and we will take this experience with us to the next life too, I expect, as if not, what is the point of this life here, especially if we are to be judged on stuff we do not even remember, if our memories are not carried across with us, somehow.

@innertalks The material excesses that we indulge in will prove an albatross around our necks as we get too attached to them till our last moments here. We should take flight with the baggage of only good deeds that will boost our rocket in no time to heaven!
