Years ago my uncle (my mom's brother that was like a father to me) purchased a mobile home that was in a neighborhood/park where you had to rent the lot the home sat on. His sister (my mom) lived there with him.
At first it wasn't bad because they were younger, worked and could do some repairs needed on the home or afford to hire someone to do them. Later they got older and couldn't work therefore didn't have as much money to afford the repairs on the home that was older too. They were living with no heat, AC, windows, some plumbing and roof needing replaced. They refused to move to an apartment!
Then my uncle passed away!
and my mom couldn't afford to even pay the lot rent by herself and had to move out.
As you have seen in my previous "Strange Landlords" series of discussions living in privately owned houses and condo's doesn't always work for the good unless you find a great landlord and usually that means you need to have money.
Living in most affordable apartments these days the neighborhoods aren't the good as well as the apartment sizes are not very big. But I have found that the maintenance is pretty well run!
The past few apartments that I have lived in if there is something wrong and I call the office, "usually" (unless they are real busy) they come soon to do the repair and not complain!
Therefore I think that if I win the lottery (
) or find another way to come into a lot of money I would pay cash for a house and the rest in the bank to save for repairs! So meanwhile I am living in an apartment!
What about you?

If I won a considerable amount of money I would be returning to Latvia

Thankfully we own our own home...but the property taxes keep increasing every year. We have some projects that we want to do once we retire within the next year...that we haven't had time to do.

Housing is a huge problem for so many here. Owning a house is now a pipe dream for many.
