Severe weather day is here. I watched some of the coverage out of Wisconsin last night. While there was considerable damage in a couple of small towns, there are no reports of fatalities or injuries. That’s the best news. While we wait for the “main line” of storms this evening, I’ll treat you to another song from 1975. Here’s today’s song. Rockin’ Chair - Gwen McCrae Gwen McCrae was on the obits list last month. I mention this all the time when her name comes up (or her husband, Gordon McCrae), because I think it’s a pretty interesting and weird anomaly in music history. In 1974, Gordon hit #1 with a song called “Rock Your Baby.” (Side note: it was co-written by Harry Wayne Casey, the front man of KC & the Sunshine Band.) It turned out to be his only hit. It’s pretty unusual for a one-hit wonder to have their ONLY hit be a #1 success. About a year later, along came his wife, Gwen, with a sequel or “answer”-type song. If he wanted to rock his baby, she was making the offer to be his “Rockin’ Chair.” Gordon sang back-up on her song. And, waddayaknow, HER song went to #1. And it was her only hit. And that’s the story of the his-and-hers #1 single one-hit wonders. For the record, I like this one better than Gordon’s song. Rockin’ Chair Written by Willie Clarke and Clarence Reid Recorded by Gwen McCrae Released as a single, 1975 Make me feel like a cloud in the sky:

I know this song because my favorite chair to sit in to listen to music and watch TV was a rocking chair with red cushions,

Lots of good songs about rocking chairs. I’m particularly fond of “Easy Rocking Chair” by Eddy Arnold.

You know how those one-hit wonders are: the song stays with you but their name fades quickly.
