People sing it, whistle it as they walk along the street in Piraeus. In English it’s the film and song Never on a Sunday, the much sanitised, processed and diminished version of the gutsier Greek original, “Ta pedia tou Peria”.
When I was in Piraeus a week or so ago a group of bazouki players were playing the song in the square outside a Church and a hesitant young woman sang. She was a shy young thing but she let it rip when she got to the best bit and the crowd of elderly people watching joined in and there was dancing.

What a beautiful moment to witness—music truly has a way of bringing people together, especially in places like Piraeus where tradition and spirit run deep. That young woman finding her voice and the crowd joining in must’ve felt magical. Thank you for sharing that lovely scene!

Some of those buskers that play in the streets are so talented.
