There is no rhyme or reason to this. He was speaking in front of steelworkers in western PA where foreign company Nippon either already has a plant or had pledged to build one before Biden canceled the deal. Trump was in favor of that until his disastrous unhinged tariffs derailed the stock market over the past several months. Now suddenly he is favor of it. So while he was speaking in front of the steel employees he announced that he was jacking up the tariff on foreign steel from 25% to 50%. Yeah because that has gone so well so far. My immediate thought was for my ex who used to head up a steel fabricating plant and who still is very involved in construction with steel. His response was positive and said that his contracts all require the use of US steel and that it would only impact them if the domestic producers were opportunistic and raised prices accordingly. I said "OF COURSE THEY WILL!" This Trump tariff insanity is. . . insane. There is no rhyme or reason. There is no measured or considered thought let alone consultation with economic experts. I can only calm my mind with the knowledge of TACO--Trump Always Chickens Out. He will back down soon. Moron.

wouldnt the US be better in the long run producing it's own steel perhaps with a surplus to export to offset the upgrading of infrastructure required to make it profitable and competitive in the worlds markets. It would create jobs and more people earning means more taxation for the government and improvements in people's lives and communities

Sure but if the foreign steel is so much more expensive what would keep the domestic mills from raising their prices as well? They'd have no reason not to. My ex doesn't seem concerned and he certainly knows more about business and the world of steel than I do.

@NJChicaa They would be capped on what they could charge because that cap would ensure that imports were not necessary - It would also appease the net zero people by reducing the carbon footprint of the steel industry To be honest, I don't like Trump but he is right about this taking a long term view. It's better to produce at home for everyone. Your ex is right, this is actually amforward thinking policy which if delivered would assure the American steel.industry future for a long long time Regeneration from within.

@Ineeddentures I trust my ex on this topic because he obviously knows more than I do about it. Too bad he doesn't trust me about having armed teachers in schools.
