Actors I only like in certain movies or didn't like until a certain movie

Has there ever been a movie with an actor/actress you normally don't like but love them in a certain movie/movies? Or has there ever been an actor you didn't like until you saw them in a certain movie and then you loved them after that? I have never been a huge Robert Mitchum fan. I don't hate him and never have but he was always just kind of there and I never minded him in supporting roles but didn't really care to see him as a lead actor in anything. I can't tell you why this is but I just have never been a huge fan but one of my favorite Christmas movies is "Holiday Affair". I don't know what it is but I like him in that movie. I've seen the more recent remake which may have been made for television I honestly don't know because I saw it on TV but either way, it wasn't the same as the Mitchum version. I really enjoyed him in that movie but still haven't been a big fan of his apart from some roles he did where he played more of a supporting role like in "The Grass is Greener" and "What a Way to Go" in which he was a supporting actor. His part in "What a Way to Go" is my favorite of Shirley's husbands in that movie. I honestly feel the reason I've never really enjoyed him in a lot of movies is because he did a lot of Westerns (I know he did a lot of other roles too) but I'm not a huge Western fan and I feel like that's what I typically associate him with even though I do know he has done other genres. An actor I love now but didn't originally understand the appeal is Clark Gable. My mom has always loved Clark Gable and I just didn't get it until I saw "Gone with the Wind". Something about that movie set up my love of Clark Gable as an actor and I started watching all of his movies and really enjoyed watching him. I don't know what it is about his portrayal in that movie but it sparked my love for him as an actor. I love a lot of actors and most of them I've loved since I first saw them, but others had to creep up on me. There are also a lot of underrated actors I like that most people don't know who they are. My love for older movies already means a lot of my friends never know who I'm talking about. I have a few friends who I enjoy talking about old movies with and who understand my love for certain actors. It's rare when I find someone around my age who has any clue of who I'm talking about, maybe that's why I've started sharing my love of old movies with my son, so I finally have someone to talk to about them that isn't in their 70s or older and because I just genuinely enjoy sharing something I love with him.

I choose the move that I watch based on the genre and if there are anyone who I want to see. Generally people like Keanu Reeve is an auto yes.

I typically find an actor I already like and make my way through their movies or sometimes I just scroll through streaming sites and see what sounds interesting depending on my mood. I don't always go based on genre or actors. There are some actors that I don't particularly like and if I see they're the lead I'll usually keep scrolling.

@sissy15 I know what you meant especially if a character keep acting the same type of role which will eventually make it fatigue to watch them (e.g. Tom Cruise)

@id_peace yes, or sometimes for whatever reason I just don't like them. For instance everyone loves Jimmy Stewart and he seemed like such a great person from what I've heard about him but as an actor I just can't watch him in a lead role because he is just so slow speaking and acting and for whatever reason it grates and I can't explain it. It's not hate on him as a person but I just can't watch him as a lead actor. I always feel like Adam Sandler in Billy Madison wanting to yell out "t t t today junior" and poor Jimmy it's not even his fault but I just can't watch him for that long in a movie but I've tried.

What an interesting question. I always liked Robin Williams as a comedian but didn’t care for Mork and Mindy. It wasn’t until I saw him do some truly great and dramatic acting in The World According to Garp that his brilliance as a diverse actor came through for me. That was also the movie that brought John Lithgow to my attention.

I never really watched Mork and Mindy. I always loved Robin Williams but never would have pegged him as a dramatic actor originally but then I saw some of his acting abilities and was astounded by his talent. He wasn't just comedy gold he was actually a gifted actor. John Lithgow has always just kind of been there for me. I like him when I see him in stuff but he has never been set apart for me.

I wasn't a big Robert Mitchum fan but have grown to like him more over the years. "Holiday Affair" is a favorite of mine, too. Have you seen "Christmas in Connecticut"? It's good too. I love vintage movies and the real Hollywood. I have found many channels on YouTube that have videos about the old years of Hollywood, and I really enjoy watching them.
