What's a Clue That Someone in Another Country is an American?

United States

I'm on a roll this morning pointing out the differences that other countries find unique about Americans. It used to be said that you could spot an American in a foreign country if they were wearing white tennis shoes or a baseball cap. That's still true. But there are other clues as well. 1. WATER BOTTLES Americans are constantly carrying around a water bottle everywhere we go in a foreign country, as if we're never going to have access to clean water again. It's even more obvious if it's not a store bought water bottle but a Yeti or a Stanley swinging from a carabiner from their belt. 2. ICE IN OUR DRINKS I might be the only American who doesn't like ice in my drinks. I always order mine without out. But for most Americans, we stand out like sore thumbs in other countries asking for lots of ice in our drinks. 3. STRAIGHT WHITE TEETH No, that's not a knock on anybody else. Americans have whiter straighter teeth than those in other countries on average. Other countries assume we all have had braces on our teeth and/or bleach our teeth. There really is a marked difference in teeth around the world. I'm not being mean. 4. DRESSING CASUALLY Yes, we look like we're wearing pajamas in public sometimes. Sweat pants. Baggy clothes. People in other countries dress more formally than Americans do and they look better than we do. 5. BEING LOUD I've heard it said and I've read it that Americans are loud. I can't say that I've particularly noticed that, but I'll take it as a true if other countries say we're loud. 6. WE IDENTIFY WITH OUR JOBS Almost always you'll meet an American and he or she will say, "I'm Sally from Nebraska and I'm a nurse, what do you do?" Americans always ask other people what they do for a living. For my non-American friends here on myLot, what other ways do you immediately spot an American in your country?

I can easily spot men because they wear a baseball cap. At a restaurant, if they cut with the right hand, then swap the fork to the right hand to eat that bit, they can only be Americans!

I like to wear a baseball cap, but if it isn't too windy, then I go for my panama

@Ronrybs - Hard to see men with baseball cap here in Italy or in Switzerland. A panama is a nice hat.

Well since our oil boom in the 1970,s Americans in tens of thousands have become resident here so they blend in well. Most of us carry water bottles Our teeth are usually straight and white and from Turkey. We Scots are loud and proud We are the epitome of smart casual dressers And as I posted on here, I won our drinks is us. And what I have noticed most about Americans here is that they are pleased and proud that they live and work here. But you still ain't as fiercely patriotic as we Scots are.

Interesting to see the responses from foreign countries!
