A group of experts came across a picture of 5 Clifton sisters in dirty work dresses. Their faces smudged and hair untidy. It seems that in August of 1846 they helped authorities save 14 inter racial children from an abandoned estate at the edge of their town. The picture was taken to commemorate the event , and used later as evidence in court when the child slavery ring was finally brought to trial. These sisters began what was later the beginning of orphanages and child welfare in the US.
The five sisters later parished in a fire that spread in their home. The fire was thought to be arsen.
