Then And Now

Would you say people were better behaved - say a century or more ago? I suppose they were - in some aspects. Crime was rampant then too and other behaviors which makes me happy l belong to this age. There was a time when women couldn't vote, have their own documents or talk back to their husbands. In fact there is a European country where in the 17th century, the law allowed husbands to beat their wives! And one of the stipulations was that if the "rod of correction" was a stick, it should be of a certain thickness. These days wives can talk back and even punch their husbands. These days, parents are afraid to hit their children. These days if you step on someone's toes, apologising won't help. You could still find yourself in serious trouble. Thinking about life back then and now l prefer the now. What about you. Pixabay image.

I don't know, I wasn't alive to witness how people behaved then compared to now... You have to wonder how much the news media played around with the truth back then compared to now. We KNOW the media makes things up from wholecloth just to gain reader (or watcher) attention... You can't base what we think we know against what actually happened unless you were physically there to see it for yourself.

@Kandae11 And you know that the winners in anything write our history books... Do you really believe they put everything in there?

What about history and history books and documentations. Our knowledge of the past comes from what we read and l suppose the immediate past from what our grandparents told us.

That’s such a thoughtful reflection—and honestly, I think every era has had its ups and downs. Life a century ago might seem more disciplined or polite on the surface, but a lot of that came from strict social rules, and as you mentioned, many of those weren’t fair—especially for women and children. The idea of a “rod of correction” with a legal thickness is wild! These days, people have more rights, more freedom to speak up, and more protection—which is definitely something to be grateful for. On the flip side, the modern world can feel more sensitive and fast-paced, and sometimes you can land in hot water over things that might have once just earned you a raised eyebrow. So I guess there’s no “perfect” era, but like you, I’d still choose now. With all its quirks and challenges, at least we’re moving (mostly) in the right direction.

Things weren’t always better back then. People might have seemed more polite on the outside, but a lot of unfair and harsh things were accepted as normal, especially for women and children compared to now

Everything changes for the better or for the worse. It depends on the influence of modernization as well as in the place where you live. There's a saying that says if you're in Rome, act like the Romans do. That's keeping up with their norms and culture.

In some aspects, I prefer the now: more helpful apps, emails, and cellphones make communication easier, women obtained equal rights, I prefer the then because there was more respect for teachers, older people and others.

I think I chose the time when women get their equal rights in society. I will just prepare then, but not the "now" today... because the world is getting worse... the"rights" of humans are being abused by most of the people who want their ideology of life to become first and real when the truth is they are just all scumbag destroying the world's morals. Disclaimer I am not good and clean, I have my flaws, and I admit i am also a sinner, but I just know and admit my sins and will never impose it to be right to others.

I think many people harp back at the good old days but were they really? With diseases that were untreatable! 100 years ago penicillin had still not been discovered. Insulin had only been around for four years, some anticonvulsants had only just been discovered. There were no CT or MRI scans. People generally had more manners. People today cannot imagine what it was like even when I was born TV was a squre box with 2 channels & usually ended at midnight now there are 100's of channels & it was monochrome colour TV had yet to be discovered. As for mobile telephones or computers forget it. Crime was still a thing back then & you rarely heard of it as the media was not so widespread. The world has come on but at what cost zombie people stuck with faces stuck to their phones or tablets! We are lucky with the advances in medicine. The standard of living is better.

@Kandae11 I agree with you about the processed foods. Foods in the past were preserved naturally. We always cook from scratch so you know full well what is going in your food.

Apart from obvious crime aspect I would say that people were much better behaved years ago. Unfortunately, today people are of the mind that they can do and say what they like. Very sad.
