Past midsummer already!

So yesterday was the summer solstice, midsummer’s day! Can’t believe the longest day is past already. Yesterday was an absolutely glorious summer day though, just perfect. Sunny and warm, but not too hot (at least not unless you were doing something physical, in which case it was rather on the hot side). In the evening I was sitting out in the garden enjoying the sunshine. I didn’t want the day to end, knowing that it’s all downhill from here back to winter again. At about 10 O’clock I had to admit the sun had set and the day was officially over. I hope everyone had a good midsummer day (or midwinter if you are on the other side of the equator!) I'm not understanding something here... The first day of summer was June 20th...

@BarBaraPrz I thought I was misunderstanding something. Good to know I'm not the only one.

I never understood that either, that would make summer last only three days. And it has obviously been summer here since before the 20th. Apparently 'astronomical summer' begins at the summer solstice (20/21 June) and ends at the autumn equinox (22 September). That seems way too late to me in relation to the actual summer weather. Meanwhile 'meteorological summer' begins on 1st June and ends on 31st August. That's a bit more realistic. And the summer solstice/ longest day of the year is known as midsummer's day.

It was a bit hot down here, so I spent most of the day hiding indoors

Yes if it continues like this we may end up retiring to 'the north'!

It's hot here. I get depressed when I think of the days getting shorter again and winter coming. I don't like the excessive heat; but I like the cold and s**w even less!

Oh it wasn't a good day here It was way too hot. Poor Yvonne was struggling for breath.. Even fans on and doors and windows open and I couldn't get the house much below the 27C.we had outside. Going outside was out of the question for Yvonne as well. I had to go and fix an Internet connection issue in a guy's house - no windows open and I almost suffocated. Thankfully today it's a bit fresher and it's only 20C in here now. 11pm and just shut the windows. It's hardly going back to winter again, just saw the forecast for the next week and mid to high teens will do me fine

We have had some hot days here too. On those days I keep all the curtains and blinds closed, windows open on the north side of the house and at the very top of the stairs to try and draw cool air in. It works quite well. We keep 'hot water bottles' in the fridge so if it's still hot at bed time we take one of those! I also like to run a shallow, very cool bath - just enough water to dampen a flannel - then I just swish the cool water over myself (or if not in the bath, just wipe all over with a cool damp flannel) then I dry myself until I'm not quite dry, just still slightly damp. It really helps and feels so refreshing.

@Fleura Sounds like you have it all under control regarding keeping cool and fresh. Me, I am a cold shower man. It's great. I don't know why, but our bedroom is always quite cool at night. Just as cool in the summer as it is in the winter from about 2am onwards
