Did you ever wonder about the second little hole in the bottom of a safety pin? Safety pins are amazing feats of engineering. You can use them to hold a broken zipper together, to hang things on your backpack, for sewing projects, and the list goes on. There are two holes in a safety pin - a big one at the top where it latches and a small one at the bottom inside the coil. The big hole at the top or latching area takes some of the pressure off so you can flex the pin more easily when opening and closing it. The little hole in the safety pin is there to maintain spring tension in order to let the safety pin snap shut and stay shut. Did you know there's multiple different types of safety pins? Traditional safety pins Black safety pins are the same as traditional safety pins but don't show up on camera. Steel coilless safety pins for use with delicate fabrics like lace and such Pear-shaped safety pin so you can hang things like charms from the bottom. Kiltie safety pins are obviously the giant pins for fastening kilts.

Interesting. What would we do without them?

We have a couple around somewhere, but we hardly ever use them. I'm not even sure I'd know where they are if I needed one. lol

Thanks for the info on safety pins, That second hole I always figured was just from the way the formed the pin,

Always amazes me, the amount of engineering that goes into even the thinnest object
