I lack the best tone to use while requesting someone who owes me a debt to repay me

Loaning or being loaned are among the inevitable things that occur in any society. At least every average person is glad to be of help to a person in need. When a person asks for a loan, they usually give very genuine reasons to convince the loaner. However repayment becomes a big issue and in some cases causes fallouts even between best friends. I have personally lost some friends who begun avoiding me when they defaulted my loans to them. Calls go unanswered, text messages are no longer replied. I have totally failed to understand how best to request my money back without creating an uneasy coexistence with my debtors!

I have a golden rule. I never loan money to anyone. Not even family. Period. So, it is something I never have to deal with.

Do not loan the money unless you are prepared to never see it again. It rarely ends well, as you said. The only person I ever loaned money to was my sister because I knew without a doubt she would pay me back, and her plan to pay me back was realistic. In the case of friends, I’ve given them money, but never loan. I’m too wary of it getting in the way of our relationship.
