Good news: this is the last “Linda? NO!!!!!” warning for this countdown. Next month’s “sun” songs aren’t looking too promising for avoiding that, though.
Oh well. Here’s another song from a previously-used list, showing up again…which means I really like it.
#4: Southern Moon - Louvin Brothers
I had planned on using the Delmore Brothers’ original; however, it has what was then an acceptable term that is now considered offensive, so I’ll use the Louvins’ version from 1960. They recognized the changing times and “cleaned up” the song (even though they used the same term in one of their songs three years earlier!).
Their version of this song takes the happiness of the Delmores’ original and slows down the tempo to make it more wishful (as opposed to the Delmores’ anticipatory celebration).
The Louvins and the Delmores were from opposite ends of Sand Mountain in northern Alabama, a generation apart. They had more in common than just being legends in Alabama country music history (they’re both in the Alabama, Country Music, and Nashville Songwriters halls of fame): they created timeless harmonies. This album, a tribute to the influence the Delmores had on the Louvins, tied them together forever.
It’s one of my favorite albums, and one I’d reach for if they told me I had to grab albums in 30 seconds to go to a desert island.
Southern Moon
Written by Alton and Rabon Delmore

I want to meet my sweetheart there in the lane:

You have aroused the curiosity in me.
The now offensive term?

@Ineeddentures — there’s a “code.” If you hear a modern bluegrass act doing an OLD (pre-1945) song and they sing “old folks,” that expression has replaced a racial slur.

@FourWalls
It should be sung with the original lyrics.
Can't change or rewrite history
I am sick fed up with everyone finding something to be offended by

I've never heard of the Louvin Brothers. I usually recognize the country artists.

That’s okay. You won’t know today’s either, but at least it isn’t country.

Not surprised, not too many people like to go back to the 30s for their music the way I do.

No surprise. You can already pre-type “no” for tomorrow, too.
