My good friend from Algiers referred to those who preach naturism as “Protestants of the Flesh”. He of course was no stranger to skinny dipping and didn’t have any problem with running about the beach in the altogether, but he didn’t see any need to organise such activity into a movement, no need to promote it or extol it - he just did it.
But aren’t there always people ready to formalise all human activity? Football used to be a group of friends kicking a ball about in the street or a field, but now it has had the life formalised out of it and of course it was ripe for monetising.
Another example is the Gap Year. It used to be that a person might decide to travel for a year or so before going to university. Such a thing didn’t have a name to begin with, it was just someone deciding independently to do something they wanted to do, but then some ostrogobulous wee scrot gave it a name. Now people write books about it and you can buy special insurance for it. You can even get people to plan your Gap Year for you so that all you need to do is pay through the nose and turn up. It’s reassuring for parents of course but the prospect for me is totally mind-numbing. When I took my “gap year” it turned into 6 years.

Ostrogobulous.
Must confess I did have to look that one up.
I had no idea that the word was once used as an alternative name for a Gonk.
We had Gonks when we were kids.
Did you have a gonk.?
Been really interesting reading about the word.

@Ineeddentures Only on TV. “Yer da’s my ma’s gonk” was an insult often hurled at a fellow pupil who had annoyed one at my school.

I can relate to all of thise. And what were nice places to visit are now filled with noisy tourists, park here/don't park here/pay for parking here. It's very annoying.

I've never heard of the Gap Year. What did you do for 6 years? Have a good week.
