Customer Tried Forcing His Way In After Close — Then Verbally Attacked Me

I work in retail and just had one of the worst experiences in a while. We had just locked the doors after closing when a customer tried to shove his arm through the door to force it open. I told him we were closed, and he immediately launched into a verbal tirade, calling me a "f#!@ing c#!@" among other things. I’m still shaken. I get that people get frustrated, but there’s absolutely no excuse for that kind of behavior. We’re human beings just doing our jobs. Has anyone else dealt with something like this? How do you shake it off after such a nasty encounter?

People are people, and not all of them are nice or of their right mind. Not sure how I'd deal with something like this. At the same time, I'd sure not let it ruin my day.

I was an over night Assistant Manager and that happened all the time. Especially at night. We closed when there was not enough help at 1AM for an hour. People were banging on the doors yelling this is a 24 hour store. I was alone in the store and the pharmacy. only had one person so we both had to take a break.

@ccarolyn Working in retail is such a high risk job now. It’s hard to believe that people think it’s alright to abuse people who work in shops.
