What will he give up next?

As I’ve mentioned before, my partner gave up alcohol quite a while ago – it must be 5 or 6 years ago already. He tried for a month, and although he used to be quite a keen drinker before, he said he didn’t miss it and was quite happy to have a cup of tea instead. Well now he has given up tea! (and coffee). It’s funny how much these personal decisions affect everyone. Originally we used to enjoy a country walk to a nice pub at a weekend, or a chat over a glass of wine on a Friday evening, but we no longer do that. Then with the two of us mostly working at home I could at least pop my head round the door now and then to ask if he’d like a cup of tea, but now I can’t even do that! Him giving up alcohol also makes me feel like some sort of sinner if I fancy a drink. And overly eager if a friend is interested in having a glass of wine with me! And now I’m making coffee just for myself as well. When my friend came round yesterday with her menagerie I was ready to make coffee for us both - but then she said she was off caffeine and had a herbal infusion instead. I’ve taken to buying coffee beans so I can grind them fresh as I don’t drink all that much and if it’s just me making a couple of cups a day then by the time I get to the bottom of the packet of ground coffee it won’t be as nice, but beans keep better. But now I’m wondering what is he going to give up next? All rights reserved. © Text and image copyright Fleur 2025.

Haven't given up, but I've certainly cut down on the amount of booze I drink and cut in half the amount of daily tea

I can understand that, but I just don't see the point of stopping completely. I thought tea was supposed to be good for you anyway?

@Ronrybs Yes I subscribe to the idea of moderation too. I don't understand why it's necessary to go from possibly too much to absolutely none at all!

@Fleura I am of the school that thinks just about everything, in moderation, is good for you... especially choc!

Omg I felt like a sinner when I wanted a drink and Yvonne couldn't have one because of her medication. Two whole weeks I tippy toed around her pretending not drinking didn't bother me.. I was waiting for her to say I could have a drink if I wanted even though she couldn't But she didn't So I did, and as I was pouring my Jim Beam into the jigger she bursted out laughing And I spilled almost a double

@Fleura Gin and Tonic on a Sunday sounds good to me.. Yvonne had to stop smoking, I tried and failed And I still feel like a criminal for sneaking out to the garden to smoke

As long as he’s not thinking of giving up you, everything is fine!

Interesting. It seems everyone is giving up everything! I would drink my coffee without guilt. You shouldn't have to give up everything you like.
