When's The Last Time You Just Dropped By Somebody's Place Unannounced?

When I was growing up, it was just routine to stop by somebody's house to visit them unannounced. Sometimes you'd bring cookies or a gift but often you just popped in for a short visit. But today's etiquette experts say that this "Baby Boomer" habit is tone deaf and outdated and unacceptable. Nowadays people don't do much personal contact. It's all through text and email and chat rooms. In these times an unexpected knock at the door could alarm you. The "experts" say you should text your intended target with a "Hey, I'm in the neighborhood and I have fresh cookies, can I pop in?" The "experts" also say if you're the one being popped in on that you should set firm boundaries, such as saying, "Now's not really a good time, but I'm open to Sunday Morning coffee" or some such language. I get it, I really do. But it seems like it was nice visiting with people back in the day.

I'm reluctant to visit without letting the people know we're coming nowadays. I'd do it with good friends but even then I try to ring first.

Well I don't just drop in at anyone's house unannounced for the simple reason I do not like people turning up here unannounced. If anyone texted me and said they had fresh cookies I would make sure that the cookies were not those Danish Cookies I posted about recently.

Despite being a boomer, I hate dropping in unannounced

We never went anywhere unannounced; but we had a relative that would just pop in. My mother was always upset because she didn't have a chance to bake anything.

Yes , I really like unplanned visit in any place because I feel comfortable some people will not think too much about my everyday routine.

With the increase of responsibilities, I understand people needing some advanced notice. It used to be fun to have an unexpected visitor. Now, it can be terribly inconvenient. Whether you have a health condition, you’re taking care of an elderly parent, or have a special needs child, it’s just kinder to call ahead. People like my dad will still welcome you with open arms if you just stop by, but he’d never do that to someone else. The last time I dropped by someone’s place unannounced was my late grandparents, and they absolutely loved it. I’ve never done it to non family though.
