I can't fathom why people cry for their pets, until

Previously, I couldn't understand why people cry for their pets, until I had a pet dog that I was forced to take care of because my late husband brought her home. She was a snarky and mischievous one, and I named her Piper. Often, only Piper and I were left at home, so I had to feed her and tend to her. With each day that I did that, our bond grew stronger. When I went to work, she would wait for me at the door and wag her tail at me. She jumped up in joy and didn't stop until I patted her head. When I was rushed to the hospital during an emergency, no one remembered that she (Piper) needed to be fed. but when I went back home. She still stood as a sentinel at the door of the empty house, although weak and hungry, waiting for me to return. I was teary-eyed when she jumped up to greet me. She had bruises and small wounds on her body, perhaps from foraging for food. My grandkids took care of him afterwards. He lived for almost 10 years. When she peacefully died in her sleep, I cried for him. Right then, I understood why pet owners cry for their pets. Have you experienced a similar event in your life?

Not being fed when you were hospitalised is a sad thing to hear.

@allknowing That was a long time ago, now I live with my youngest, because they're afraid it could happen again.

@Jenaisle Sorry. I did not know you live alone in the house. This can happen to any one. Pets do suffer I guess

Poor thing, I wonder how no one remembered that she needed to be fed.

They all panicked, and I was unconscious, so they forgot about the dog. They lived apart from me, so they have forgotten that I have one pet in the house.

That really struck a chord with me—your story about Piper was so heartfelt, and I truly felt the bond you shared. It reminded me of my own experience with a dog we had growing up. He was incredibly disciplined—he’d wait patiently by the gate for us to come home from school, and he never made a mess inside the house. He would only do his business once we were home and let him out, like he knew and respected the rhythm of our days. He wasn’t just a pet—he was part of the family, tuned in to our routine, loyal in every way. Sadly, we lost him in the worst way—he was taken by dognappers, and we never saw him again. That pain still lingers. It wasn’t just losing a dog, it was losing a friend, a constant presence who gave us nothing but love and trust. Dogs really are special that way. They don’t care about your flaws, your mood, or your mistakes. They just want to be with you, to see you happy, and to share simple, honest moments together. That kind of loyalty is rare—and unforgettable.

Very well said. You've described exactly how I felt. Indeed, dogs are loyal and special. They love you no matter what. What they say that dogs are man's best friends is indeed true.

Glad he was okay when you got home. I have lost many pets. They were all family

Yes. Many times. It hurts so much when a dog passes. There is nothing better than a dog greeting you with a wagging tail. It's sad that Piper was left without food.

It was truly sad. I cried when I saw him still guarding the front door.

Yes. Many times in fact. As a kid, several times. Over the past 41 years my family has had at least a dozen dogs that were permanent and we rescued another dozen. When each one passed, it would break me. I saved collars and tags from each one. I have one dog now. Blue. He is my shadow. Wherever I go, he goes. I'll have a hard time when he goes.

They're truly man's best friend. Have fun with him while he's still here.

Your tears were not just for a pet but for a friend, a presence, and a shared chapter in your life.
