I Just Got Scammed On My Credit Card and Google Pay

I feel so foolish right now. I'm kicking myself in the butt. I received an incoming phone call from someone saying they were with the Fraud Department at my credit card company. They gave me the first 8 digits of my credit card. They knew my name. They told me there were attempted charges at a WalMart store in Alabama and online for software and asked me if I had made them. Naturally I said no. They went into this whole spiel about how they could cancel my card for me or send me out a replacement one. I was on the phone with them for 12-15 minutes. Each minute I worried more and more that it was a fraudulent scam call. Whatever the last question they asked me, it screamed "FRAUD" to me so I hung up. I don't think I gave them any sensitive information that they didn't already have. They were trying to send me text notifications to allow them to access my Google Pay account for what they said was to disallow any attempts at fraud in the future. It didn't make sense. If it doesn't make sense, and I'm a reasonably intelligent person, then it's not true. Luckily I finally caught on that I was being scammed and I immediately called my bank on the REAL number on the back of the credit card and reported the whole thing to the REAL fraud department at my bank. I gave them the phone numbers of the calls that I received and texts that I received. That account has now been permanently closed. Whew! I immediately went in to check my old GooglePay account which I haven't had for 5 years and closed it down (I thought it already was closed). But I'm sitting here shaking at how close I was to falling for this scam. It seemed to legit and real but something kept nagging me that it didn't feel right. I'm sorry that it took me 15 minutes to figure it out, but I did finally listen to my gut and hung up on them and took immediate action. OMG! Has anything like this ever happened to you?

Not to me. I know my first husband, years ago, got pulled into a magazine scam. I had to go in and do a lot of talking to make sure we were not getting all these magazines, for only "so much per month" forever and ever. I told him just to tell people "we do not buy things over the phone." and my current husband has been hit by a skimmer on a debit card. We got that taken care of with our bank's help.

Yeah, I got taken by the fake toll ticket one, but I got the money refunded..I was just mad that I had to wait for a new card to come.

It happened to me before but I don't want to think about it anymore. I try to be more careful now.

I have had to deal with some scammers asking me to buy life insurance even though I already have life insurance and paying monthly fees.

Scammers are extremely skilled at sounding convincing, and many people even very smart, cautious ones have been fooled. You caught on before any damage was done, and that is something to be proud of.

No, the only time someone has tried to scam me through an actual phone call was someone telling me they were from Social Security and someone had been trying to steal my identity. I immediately hung up on them. I’m going to know someone was trying to steal my identity long before Social Security is going to know. Subsequently, I reported the scam call to the number they ask you to reports scams to. I’m glad you realized they were lying losers.

I got some snail mail from PayPal, saying they had suspended my account because I paid my bill. You KNOW that has to be a fraud, right? No, it was legitimate! Glad you caught on in time.
