Why Do Cats Like Boxes So Much?

Having had cats for over 32 years, I can tell you that cats like to play in, sleep in, and hide in boxes. Small boxes, big boxes, tall boxes, short boxes -- they don't care. But why do cats like boxes so much? Well, one, obviously, is they're fun. A place to hide from the humans and hang out. Next, they are innately programmed to hunt prey, so they crouch down in boxes to spring out of them at their prey, which is usually humans. Sometimes they do it to feel "safe" and protected. Often they just want a quiet place to sleep. Cardboard has an insulating factor and cats like warmth, so they find it cozy and warm to curl up in a box. Grady the Gray Cat always liked the smallest box he could possibly squeeze into. Sometimes he tried to squeeze into our wicker baskets. Does you cat like boxes?

@Ineeddentures I would love to have a Big Cat. I mean Oliver's "big" at 17 pounds, but I mean a Lion or a Puma or a Panther

I had thrown one outside the other day to burn and one of the adult cats claimed it for a hideout. I was outside and saw the box moving - it was a large box that a set of suitcases came in and had the flap down so you could not see inside. I went over and tapped the flap and the cat came shooting out like a wild thing! It was funny.

We always had dogs. They were always interested in boxes coming into the house because sometimes they contained treats or toys.

We had two cats Both liked boxes Any boxes So any boxes that came into the house I just put on the floor and the cats would jump in them and play with them

He does, but I don't think as much as most cats. He hasn't adopted one or anything. He will just sit in one for awhile if it strikes his fancy.
