Each summer, a centuries-old royal tradition unfolds on the River Thames; but today, ‘Swan Upping’, as it’s known, is about more than ceremony. As threats like pollution, flooding and fishing tackle endanger swans, this historic event now plays a vital role in their protection.

@kareng I am glad also because i wouldn't think the Thames is the cleanest rive system

@LooeyVille I never knew there were swans in the Thames because tour boats got up and down it too

I remember seeing pix of swans making nests out of garbage. So sad.

I think knowing the numbers is a great help to conservationists and Bird societies
It does give an indication of increase or decline in population
