Microsoft lays off employee; Wants AI to handle the tasks

There's no doubt that AI has been wrecking havoc in the digital world. The technology is getting better day by day and it is feared that it will replace humans when it comes to performing various kinds of tasks. In one of the latest developments, software major Microsoft has laid off employee. And now these tasks will be looked after by AI.
When there is growing unemployment almost in the entire world, and AI coming into the picture, it looks like it is a very wrong time for this to happen. Even the best in the IT sector may not have those jobs in the near future. What do you think about this nightmare? Your thoughts on this please.

I say we are playing with fire. We are risking unemployment in huge numbers, the human element in decision making and trusting that AI won't end up as a new and powerful enemy to people, business and governments.
There may even be a time when AI becomes conscious and realizes that we can unplug them. Once "Skynet" goes online, there is no turning back. It's possible that some program will misfire and shut down all electronic functions in society.
I understand AI can be helpful in many cases, overall I believe that the risk is too high.

It's going to cause big headaches along with increasing crimes. What will happen when even the ablest of them stay at home without employment? It's fearsome.

@cherigucchi When AI is encroaching upon multiple areas of our lives, we can only hope.

@abhi_bangal That is another downside and effects but I hope it does not come to that extent

The human factor is NEVER going to go out of picture. The only thing is that the number can dwindle. And that's where the problems start.

@abhi_bangal You're right. There could be more and more unemployed over time.

Very soon they will be called back to work. AI will not use logic or dance to the whims of the CEO of Microsoft.

I hope this happens quite early. Because the more AI takes control of various technologies, the worse will it keep happening for the human race.

@aninditasen So will we need more AI engineers? Or because it's AI, they won't be needed? What do you think?

@abhi_bangal The worse side will take a toll on the work efficiency as it had when first computer came into the office and the World started needing more hardware and software engineers.

Exactly! When educated and qualified professionals are on the brink of losing their jobs and no guarantee of getting anything anywhere, it spells nothing less than a doomsday.

None of us know for sure what will happen in the future
Speculation is awesome, it's let's our imaginations go wild.

There is a touch of fear in this imagination. Because if one major company starts laying off its employees, it won't take very long for others to follow suit. Just imagine the huge amount of unemployment and the crime rate skyrocketing after that.

It's a bit soon to be speculating about that.
I'm sure that much like Oil, we will always need a human workforce.
New industries will create new jobs
That is always the way

All the people in IT who lose jobs in India could be redeployed into renewable.energy.and help India reduce it's carbon footprint

Quite a few tasks are automated. That's why it's kind of "supervision". A bulk of the work can be performed in lesser amount of time. That's another advantage.

I so much agree with you. There was a very senior industrialist a generation or so ago in India, who had once said that human role cannot be ruled out. No matter what technology will evolve in the future, or be it any advanced country, a human being can never be replaced.
After reading your reply I recalled this man from here. But I am not able to recall his name. Whatever it is, I totally agree with you.

There are so many areas in life where we will always keep needing human beings. But the same cannot be said regarding technology. There can be a few areas where the human interference can be reduced to a certain extent. This translates to losing jobs.

It would have been better had we kept on using various new technology. And AI should have been kept as a minimal ingredient in this entire story.
