ICU at home

Many households opt to have ICUs at home that saves them a lot of time, energy and trauma It is no doubt expensive but looking at the travails that involve keeping a patient in a hospital ICU this seems a far better alternative if one has the money Even the patient feels good and it is reported they recover soon In my brother's case however there was no question of recovery as he was awaiting death and that happened after many many days Image credit:https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Intensive_Care_Unit.jpg

That must have been such an emotional journey for your family. I’ve heard that home ICUs, while expensive, can provide a more comforting and peaceful environment—not just for the patient but for everyone involved. There’s something about being surrounded by familiar faces and spaces that brings a sense of peace, especially when recovery isn’t an option. I’m truly sorry about your brother; it sounds like his final days were filled with love and care, which means so much. I hope you’re finding moments of peace too—grief is heavy, but the love it leaves behind is just as strong. I have to admit, it’s not a common practice where I’m from, as hiring nurses and acquiring the necessary equipment is often too costly and not easily accessible for most people.

@allknowing In our setting, it's rare to most people affording such care, especially when administering medicines requires a nurse or caregiver to provide the necessary attention. This is why many here opt for the hospital ICU, as it is fully equipped with the gadgets and staff needed to monitor and evaluate patients—resources that an ordinary household lacks. I only know a few prominent individuals who can afford to do this in my area.

@rsa101 I agree with you. Most cannot afford but those who can they do not have to visit the hospital every day and spend time there and all that involvles expensing a lot of energy.

My brother lived in a another city. But there were other family members who were there at that time If one calculated the time, energy even money spent to keep someone in a hospital ICU I think that could be more.

I am sorry for your loss. I would have loved so much to keep my mother at home, but she had to stay at the hospital, she needed constant care and it was impossible to have the necessary equipment at home.

We made this arrangement during my husband's illness but he didn't survive. The arrangement cost us a lot.

@allknowing At home doctors rarely visit so treatment is somewhat neglected. Only a full time nurse is there.

@allknowing I suppose that we do all indeed want to die in our own beds in our own homes. Maybe even with our family present Although I would rather have a cat purring in my ear as I leave this life for the next life
