Musicians find inspiration from many sources even their instruments. I tried to learn the guitar as a kid, but the calling of being outside playing baseball was too strong to resist. And I gave it up. So, although sports won out over playing music back then, at least I can enjoy listening to these classic INSTRUMENT SONGS today.
Here are the first 5 picks with comments. Which one below would be your #1 listen, or do you have a better choice?
10. Mandolin Wind- Although Rod Stewart's "Maggie May" is better known this sad ballad has some fine moments to it. Rod was really proud of this tune, the only one he wrote himself for his "EVERY PICTURE TELLS A STORY" Album. And of course it contained a mandolin on the track...
9. Jingle Bell Rock- Along with Brenda Lee's "Rockin' Round the Christmas Tree" this Bobby Helms classic is one of my favorite Christmas toe-tapping tunes. Nothing traditional about this 1957 song it rocks...
8. Guitar Man- This melancholy song by the band "Bread" with simple but telling lyrics is about the interrelationship between a musician and his fans. Musicians telling their stories in song and fans trying to understand them...
7. Squeeze Box- Although the title is a reference to an Accordion, this song by "The Who" was not exactly what Pete Townshend was thinking about when he wrote this tune with a sex referenced double entendre...
TRIVIA CHALLENGE- NAME THAT TUNE!
***Here is one of my favorite choices for INSTRUMENT SONG. Can you figure out which song title from the clues provided... Words with quote marks provide valuable hints!
#6- A "One-Hit Wonder" song from the "Lemon Pipers" which reached the #1 spot on the charts in 1967. Toss a few coins into this "color named" instrument and look what you get, a successful tune! And the band is not fussy "Give me pennies, I'll take anything. Now, listen while I play (play, play, play-) my ________________________."
***Can you name this instrument song? Hope you "tune into" the correct answer!
Till the next one...
