Tamis

I heard the word on a cooking show and was so impressed that I learned something new. A tamis is a fine metal strainer used to get the last lumps from mashed potatoes and to sift flour. I have a sifter for flour, as love to bake. Have you used a Tamis? I found many of them online and would have bought one when I first was married, as my family thought my mashed potatoes were always lumpy and his family didn't say anything. It was nice they didn't say anything, as my potatoes were lumpy or overbeaten. Anything you wish was in your kitchen?

I have never used one of these things before for my mashed potato It looks like a bit of a scutter and then involves cleaning afterwards A few lumps are ok by me As long as there is plenty of salt in them and they are well buttered and reasonably smooth

I wouldn't buy one now, as more dishes to clean isn't how I'm spending my evening. I don't mind some lumps.

I used to be a devoted follower of the Food Network until they started having nothing but cooking competition shows. I learned so much watching them. More than I ever learn from actually being in the kitchen. But, that's a term I never heard before. It almost reminds me of a potato ricer, but that's used usually before the final mashing, not after, although I'm sure it would definitely get rid of lumps.

I don't watch a lot on the Food Network now. It use to be a great way to learn new dishes and ways to use leftovers. I'm still a Chopped watcher, but there are days when I'm ready to not watch the end of an episode.

I had never heard of that before. I don’t think I’ve ever made mash potatoes as I doubt mine would be very good.
