Mixing ideologies

I was raised Christian, and those values are still part of who I am — faith, forgiveness, hope. But now that I’ve been learning about Buddhism, I’ve found a different kind of peace. It doesn’t conflict with my past beliefs, strangely — it deepens them. For example, both Christianity and Buddhism talk about compassion and surrender. In Buddhism, it’s letting go of ego and control. In Christianity, it’s surrendering to God’s will. Different paths, but similar messages. I wonder — can someone walk with both? Draw wisdom from Christ and still sit quietly with Buddha? Just curious — has anyone else tried blending spiritual traditions, or learned something surprising from a different faith?

As far as I am concerned I am not religious but believe in a discipline that makes me spend time usefully benefitting me and those aorund me and this I can do by bringing God in my life.

You sounded more like Buddhist philosophy, emphasizing self-discipline and striving to be good and pleasing to both your God and others, rather than adhering strictly to a specific religion.

@allknowing That is also true, but there is always a foundation for that truth, which is where we dig deeper and gain a better understanding of why they are the way they are. Religion or belief systems may provide an answer or evidence that you are on the right track.

I'm sure we can learn a lot from Buddhism although I don't really know a lot about it.

Actually it inspired me to write a reflection about it but it seems a bit long to be posted here. It looks like a book of some sort. I just have the manuscript written in Word Doc.

@rsa101 I guess you could post it in parts if you wanted to. Longer posts don't always attract a lot of attention.

@JudyEv That's correct; I'm still thinking about how to make it shorter while still conveying the true meaning.

I am a mixture of all belief. I do not know who I should believe totally so I just pick and choose on what I think it is right.

That has some truth to it, but if you don't stick to one that you truly believe in, you risk becoming confused and lost because there are many out there who aren't but claim to be.
