Amid all of the historical markers on the sidewalk in the Greenwood section of Tulsa that was known as Black Wall Street, the memorials in the park, and the state historical marker, there’s one thing that drives home the agony of May 31, 1921 better than any plaque can. As they say, a picture is worth a thousand words. The painting of the riot’s toll, near the Oklahoma State - Tulsa campus and the Vernon AME Church, is a vivid description of what happened. A woman holds her dead loved one in the foreground, while behind her the chaos reigns as others run while buildings burn. Most painful is a disinterested National Guard troop to the left of the painting. The painting was done by Michael Rosato, who has done a number of other works (including the popular one of Harriet Tubman, Take My Hand). It’s painful, haunting, and exactly what needs to be said…because words just don’t suffice.

It’s worse when you’re standing there looking at it after having just walked through four blocks that were destroyed as depicted in the painting. Believe me.

It is outstanding. It’s like going to other places I’ve been…it just filled me with emotion.

@FourWalls - Some pictures bring emotions, past events that we hope never to see back.

A very evocative painting for sure. I had to look up the other painting too - that is a wonderful picture as well.

That Harriet Tubman painting is remarkable…as promising and hopeful as this one is desperate and hopeless.

@FourWalls I had not heard of the artist, he has a great talent for sure. I was afraid people might complain he is not a suitable person to paint such pictures, since he is not 'black'; I hope they don't!

@Fleura — I know what you’re saying. Talent is talent, and he captured that night in a way that takes me (and my parents weren’t even born in 1921) there.
